This is an awful proposal in terms of protecting the river's future. The fort's recent pumping is somewhat over 1,000 acre feet, so allowing them to pump 6,000 is a monstrous increase. And that would be on top of what the larger community pumps, which is already over 14,000 (including the fort's pumping). Bad bad bad idea.

Comment on The Case for Segregation: Separating Sport Fish and Native Fish Management Areas by SD Mittelsteadt

I have no problem with eliminating the stocking of non-natives completely and immediately. The faster the native populations increase in numbers and in strength, the better off the entire watershed would be. And yes....native sport fishing galore!

But I agree that option may not be popular enough to get passed. So in lieu of the complete elimination, a segregated solution is a not only a easily doable idea, but very sensible and maybe even politically palatable for some who don't normally lean in wildlife's favor.

On the other hand, maybe its time for some drastic change in the way the state manages wildlife?? Maybe its time for a grassroots effort to completely make over our definition of sport fishing and fight for a return, as much as possible, to the day when Arizona wildlife didn't need to be managed by anyone but Mother Nature???
